Golden Rule Of Poetry Slam

The point is not in the points. Poetry is the point!

The essential regulations for participating in a poetry slam include: having a time limit for each performance, no props or costumes allowed, no musical accompaniment, no explicit language, and no heckling from the audience.

  1. Each single poem must originate from the poet. 2. The primary author must be identified in each group poem. If more people are considered the primary authors, they all must be performing each poem
  2. Memorization does not have to be done. You can bring a book or sheet of paper to read from your phone.
  3. Each poet has three minutes to read one poem. The scorekeeper will deduct points if the poet takes longer than the allotted time. For every 10 seconds that they exceed the time limit, the poem/performance will be deducted.5 points (point 5) from their total score.
  4. Props, costumes, tape music or other instruments are not permitted by the poet. The stage is just for you and the poem. However, you can sing, beatbox or make other sounds during your performance.
  5.  In terms of props, you shouldn't write about your smartphone and show it off in your performance. Costumes cannot be changed during a bout. Your solo piece should be in the exact same outfit as your team piece. Costume changes could include changing your clothes in order to perform a poem.
  6. The poem must not contain sexist, racist or homophobic comments. You should use common sense and not be rude. But anger, frustration, and upset are all valid emotions to express in a poem. Just be creative about how you do it.
  7. Five randomly-selected judge assign the poet scores between 10 and 10. The poet gets a total score from 30 after the low and high scores are combined.
